The Cottages

Extension/Renovation (In Progress)

This cottage was originally…. and sits on a long narrow plot underneath the distant Dartry mountain range. The owners of the dwelling wished to approach the building with sensitivity and respect to the local character.

Acupuncture like voids were made in the North-West and South-West facades to allow for the new extensions at ground and first floor to link in with the existing building. A new porch has been added to the entrance after which you are welcomed to a warm open plan living room with a stove running up into a double height space. This spills into the open plan kitchen/dining/sitting space which orientates itself to the South-West, capturing great views of the productive garden the client has created, as well as the distant mountains. A guest bedroom is also added at ground floor.

At first floor, the original bedroom remains where it is. A new bedroom and bathroom have been added to the SW face of the building above the kitchen.

An ethos of frugality and sustainability have been fostered by the clients throughout the project. Much of the extension facades have been designed around reclaimed windows which were gifted to them due to having no use. The materials are natural and the finishes hard-wearing so the house can slowly be internally ‘finished’ over time. The external corrugated sheeting cladding is reminiscent of rural sheds which can be found throughout this rural location.
